Dog blogs

"You have to check in with my bloggy friends, Mommy!"

“You have to check in with my bloggy friends, Mommy!”

I want to write a celebration of all of the blogs I read each week. I’ve not only learned a lot, I’ve become a part of a community of real people who influence each other to be better, happier, kinder, more open and more in love with life. Every blog has its own strengths: some are full of information and advice, some are full of compassion, or humor, or recipes. Some people add photography or artwork, cartoons or videos or animation.

"Tell me the story about the doggy who likes to swim in the mud. And then the one about the piggy who watches TV, and then..."

“Tell me the story about the doggy who likes to swim in the mud. And then the one about the piggy who watches TV, and then…”

I’m afraid to do a list of dog blogs and leave people out of it, but I want to tell you how much I appreciate this blogging community and how much I’ve gotten from reading what you write. Without your influence I would never have felt ready to adopt Butterfly, or felt capable of managing her diabetes. I’m grateful for all of the validation you’ve given me that writing about dogs is a worthwhile endeavor. I love that these are real dogs acting like dogs: destroying stuffed animals, trying to steal treats, breaking through fences, napping in the sun, and playing with their friends.

I would recommend that anyone who is low on dog vitamins and high on stress, type “dogs” or “pets” into the search bar of your reader and just spend half an hour soaking up the joy.

Dogs are my organizing factor; they are the scaffolding I can hang ideas on to make things make sense. Dogs allow me to listen with compassion to ideas that might otherwise seem too foreign. I’ve noticed that I will read all kinds of posts from someone that I know loves dogs, even if nine out of ten of their posts are about something else entirely. I read about Australian politics, and gardening tips, and running and travel and cooking, all because I found a picture of a dog on that blog one day, or a cat, or a horse, or a pig. I trust that someone who loves animals has something interesting to say about other parts of their lives.

"Thank you!"

“Thank you!”

I’m going to attempt a comprehensive list here, but there are so many good dog blogs and I know I will miss too many. Please add links in the comments section to dog blogs you like. I hope I’m doing the links right.

  9. Rachel, well first off — so many thanks for compiling this list of interesting bloggers! I intend to check out each and every one. Secondly, and most humbly, thank you so much for mentioning C-Dog & Company — such an honor to be included! I echo your sentiments exactly about wanting to read the sincere, honest animal blogs I come across — and I, too, will read them before anything else. Of course, this list would not be complete without listing YOUR blog as well! You’re such a good writer, writing passionately about dogs, and your dogs are — well, just so darn cute! Thanks again!

  12. This is brilliant! I agree with every word!!! You are so right about how they make us think with more compassion and lend us a world of optimism, endless love and the ability to see the world in an unexpected way.

My life has truly been shaped by my beloved dog Buffy of sixteen years, who saw my life’s ups and downs.

I am so endeared by your pups (Butterfly and Cricket) and happy to meet a kismet soul (you). We adopted Buddy at age ten, almost eleven, and as I look at him now, how did we ever get along without his beautiful soul. We love him and of course love our Gingerbear, and we love Buffy (rest her peaceful soul, sleeping soundly near us as I write on the patio).

You should Aldo check out “Minni in Manhattan”, pretentious but cute pup and fun. Thanks for the list; will connect.

  23. So funny…I started reading this post without paying attention to where it originated. About halfway through I said to myself, “Self, this is good stuff, somebody knows how to write. I think I’ll follow this one.” The I look up to the mast head and it’s you who I enjoy following so much. Thanks for including our silly little dog blog among so many very good sources of dog stories.

  26. Enjoyed your post Rachel.
You are so right when you say our pets are our scaffolding. They bring comfort, joy, humour and love into our lives. As Maggie stretches out beside me in the ‘Pure Bliss’ position as I call it, I automatically smile and feel good about the day. Anyone who has never had a pet may not fully understand why they are so important and precious to us.

  27. Thank you for including me on your list, Rachel. I agree with most of what has been said in other comments. My dogs are precious to me more so The Man because he is growing old and I have to look after him more. But he is still fun and he still has the ability to make me laugh – he is still loved.

  38. Your blog is an inspiration to me. Reading about your adoption of Butterfly has filled me with enthusiasm which I greatly appreciate especially now as we are embarking on the adoption of a special needs rescue dog. There is just something incredibly, hugely, infinitely rewarding about the action of saving a dog’s life- of giving a dog- a sweet, smart, loving dog who just wants to be cared for a caring home. I enjoy reading each week your latest post about Cricket and Butterfly. Thank you.
