With choir rehearsals and teaching and doctors’ appointments all leading up to the Jewish high holidays, I’ve been a little bit overwhelmed. So, in place of an essay this week, please enjoy these pictures of Tzipporah trying to convince her grandma that she will starve to death if she doesn’t get one more chicken treat.

Yeshiva Girl is about a Jewish teenager on Long Island, named Isabel, though her father calls her Jezebel. Her father has been accused of inappropriate sexual behavior with one of his students, which he denies, but Izzy implicitly believes it’s true. As a result of his problems, her father sends her to a co-ed Orthodox yeshiva for tenth grade, out of the blue, and Izzy and her mother can’t figure out how to prevent it. At Yeshiva, though, Izzy finds that religious people are much more complicated than she had expected. Some, like her father, may use religion as a place to hide, but others search for and find comfort, and community, and even enlightenment. The question is, what will Izzy find?

Happy New Year. Great story, beautiful dog. I actually read Yeshiva Girl back in like 2010 /11(?) when I worked with you mom at ÙUCSR. I am the one whose friend reached out to you several months ago about housing in Manhattan. I never did apologize for that, but she is very sweet…Just going through a rough time. This might be one of the best and/or one of the most rewarding series of pictures of Tzipporah because she looks like she’s continually actively listening and trying to communicate with you two, and really believes in and looks forward to both of you and with a twinkle in her eyes. I still remember your early observations and photos of her, and she has come a long way. I also like that the T in Tzipporah could stand for trying and/or treated, and the letters a and h in Tzipporah could stand for again hungry. 😀
